Diener AG Precision Machining (Embrach, Switzerland) specializes in the manufacture of medical technology and precision mechanics. Maximum precision is required for the manufacture of medical parts—dental implants, spinal implants and surgical instruments. Diener uses solutions from Carl Zeiss IMT Corp. (Osseo, MN) to fulfill and verify these extreme demands on quality.

On-time delivery is crucial when it comes to medical products, and Diener must guarantee the quality of all its parts, including traceability of raw materials. To ensure the quality of its products in a timely manner, Diener has used an O-Inspect multisensor coordinate measuring machine (CMM) and Calypso measuring software from Carl Zeiss since August 2008.


Check Parts in Production

After the acquisition of the O-Inspect, Diener no longer needs a dedicated gage for each small part. The multisensor CMM can be used for practically all size, form and position measurements.

The O-Inspect combines optical and contact scanning into one program run and is, therefore, particularly well suited for precise, small rotating parts. Thanks to the optical sensors, these parts are no longer damaged during setup. The very small stylus tips with diameters down to 0.3 millimeters on the Vast XXT contact scanning probe also are a big advantage. The combination of optical and contact scanning results in high point density and short measuring times.

This also means that Diener loses little time as O-Inspect is located directly in a climate-controlled area of production. Using the AutoRun automation interface on Calypso enables anyone in production to operate the machine.


Total Process Monitoring

Calypso measuring software from Carl Zeiss provides an interface to statistical software from Q-DAS (Weinhein, Germany). Therefore, Diener also uses QDAS MCA/CMM software for order-related archiving of all measurement data captured via the AutoRun function on Calypso. This archived data can be easily accessed years later. Furthermore, statistical evaluations of various parameters can be performed. Therefore, each process is both completely monitored and completely traceable—the key to quality assurance.


Transfer of Proven Methods

Diener also uses the principle of a “measuring machine in production and CMM reporting” in other divisions. For dialysis and injection, Diener manufactures gears and piston pumps that are produced through milling on computer numerical control (CNC) machining centers. A DuraMax compact scanning measuring machine from Carl Zeiss with a Calypso interface optimized for ease of use is set up directly in the milling shop to measure and ensure the required accuracies. All data captured here also is archived on an order-specific basis and statistically evaluated.
