Surface Metrology Technology Considered

TUCSON, AZ-Late last year, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) B46.1 committee on classification and designation of surface qualities, met to discuss developments in surface metrology. Dr. James C. Wyant, director of the University of Arizona, Optical Science Center, introduced a technology of vibration insensitive interferometry, which allows nanometer measurements on the shop floor. This technology is being considered by the international standards community.

The B46 main committee is made up of about 30 members from industry, academia and government. Membership is available to all interested parties and guests are welcome at the meetings.
