The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) has published a new book, "Lean Manufacturing for the Small Shop," and started a monthly e-newsletter, Lean Directions.

"Lean Manufacturing for the Small Shop" describes lean manufacturing techniques and provides examples of applications and explanation of step-by-step implementation. The book also includes a CD-ROM with training tools to help managers work with teams on the shop floor and for college instructors to adapt the material to their course curriculums. To order, call (800) 733-4763.

Lean Directions provides a quick and easy way to stay up-to-date with lean manufacturing. Each newsletter will include five stories, expert advice, tips from lean implementers, updates on global development of lean manufacturing and guides to available resources. For a free subscription, visit
