CHICAGO—The ASME B46.1 committee on Classification and Designation of Surface Qualities has completed the latest revision of the B46.1 standard, B46.1—2002.

At the April meeting, the latest developments in the international surface metrology community were covered in the ISO roundtable chaired by Mark Malburg of Digital Metrology Solutions (Columbus, IN). Ted Vorburger of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST, Gaithersburg, MD) discussed the instrument-classifications standard for the ISO TC213 WG16 on Arial and Profile Surface Texture.

Guest speakers included Ed Becker of GM Powertrain (Warren, MI), who discussed recent developments in measuring cylinder bore wear. Son Bui reported on the NIST Internet-based virtual calibration Web site program, to be online in early 2004.

The B46 main committee is made up of about 30 members from industry, academia and government. Project team membership is available to all interested parties with the commitment to meet domestically twice a year and work on projects of interest.
