Eastec to Teach Manufacturers to Cut Costs, Increase Profits

WEST SPRINGFIELD, MA - For years, manufacturers in the Northeast got chills when the word energy was mentioned. Today, due to the relatively high cost of energy in the region, the Northeast is poised to become the hotbed of alternative and renewable energy technologies and resources. Eastec, the largest manufacturing event on the East Coast, will introduce the potential of this exciting trend though its Alternative & Renewable Energy Resource Center run in partnership with the Regional Technology Corporation (RTC).

“Energy is a white hot market right now with unique funding opportunities,” states Ellen Bemben, President of the RTC. “It entails everything from blue recycling baskets to wind turbines, solar products, fuel cells, advanced metals, coatings and plastic materials. The objective of this Resource Center is to provide a focal point for those considering entering or expanding in these clean technologies.”

According to Kimberly L. Farrugia, senior show manager for the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, the organizers of Eastec, the Alternative & Renewable Energy Resource Center will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 20. “We will be providing a variety of seminars on subjects like E-Design for Green Products, Opportunities with the UMass Wind Energy Center, the Positive Impact of Lean and Green on Manufacturing, Money Saving Efficiencies for Compressed Air Systems, and much more. Manufacturers will also get to spend one-on-one time with these experts to address their individual questions and objectives.”

Companies and organizations presenting at the Alternative & Renewable Energy Resource Center include: the Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering at UMass Amherst; the School of Engineering’s Wind Energy Center at UMass Amherst; Western Massachusetts Electric Company; Callaway Golf Co., Inc.; MassMEP; Alteris Renewables, Inc.; and SMC Corp of America. Eastec is co-sponsored by the SME, the American Machine Tool Distributors’ Association, and the Association for Manufacturing Technology. The event celebrates its 30th anniversary on May 19 to 21 at the Eastern States Exposition Grounds in West Springfield, MA, and is expected to draw 14,000 attendees and 600 exhibitors.
