Feds give $19M to Retrain NUMMI Workers

The federal government on Monday said it is providing up to $19 million to retrain some of the 4,300 workers laid off from New United Motors Manufacturing Inc. when the Fremont car factory was shuttered in April.

U.S. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis announced the grant, awarded to the California Development Department.

The grant will fund supportive services including dependent care and transportation assistance for workers already eligible for Trade Adjustment Assistance. Those who aren’t eligible will receive training and employment-related services under the grant.

The grant will be operated by the Alameda County Workforce Investment Board, the Contra Costa County Workforce Development Board, the San Joaquin County Employment and Economic Development Department, the Silicon Valley Workforce Investment Network, Stanislaus Alliance Worknet and the Workforce Investment Board of Solano County.
