SAE International names Bobby Crumb and Michelle T. Pierce recipients of Technical Standards Board Outstanding Contribution Award.

Crumb received his award at the fall 2010 AE-8C1 Meeting in October. Pierce received her honor at the AAQG (G-14) Meeting this past August.

This award recognizes individuals for outstanding service in the technical committee activities of the Society. This includes valuable contributions to the work of SAE technical committees, unusual leadership in the activities of an SAE technical committee, significant contributions as a representative of the Society to the accomplishments of technical committees of other organizations or of government agencies, and outstanding contributions to SAE technical committee work in the form of research, test methods and procedures, and/or development of standards.

Crumb is currently the F/A-22 Component Engineering Technical Lead at Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company with technical and supervisory responsibility of the group for the mechanical, electrical, fiber optics and hydraulic components. This role includes specifications and installation processes on the F/A-22 Program. As the lead, his role entails accountability for the electrical bonding specification, and its associated processes, such as materials and installation means used in the electrical wiring and fiber optics systems installed on the aircraft.

Previously, Crumb was involved for approximately 45 years with the development of electrical wire/fiber optics cables, and connectors. He is also a member of an industry team selected by the Air Force to review the B-2 wiring design methodology. His awards and honors include a long list of credentials, including: Certificate of Appreciation for work done in SAE AE-8A, AE-8C1, AE-8C2, and AE-8D Committees; recognition award from FAA for work done on Advisory Circular 43.13 Electronic Systems; certificate of appreciation from SAE for sponsoring multiple AS documents, such as AS4372, AS4372 and AS50881; recognition award from B-2 Program for Contribution to Wiring Design Review Society Memberships. He is currently the Vice Chairman of the AE-8C1 Electrical Connectors Committee and a member of the AE-8A Wiring and System Installation, AE-8C2 Terminating Devices and AE-8D Wire and Cable Committee’s. He holds a bachelor’s degree in physics and mathematics from Carson-Newman College.

Pierce is the Director of Systems and Software Quality Engineering at Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company. She has 31 years of experience in defense and aerospace systems in leadership; systems and software quality; avionics and software engineering; project, quality, configuration; and subcontract management.

Pierce is recognized as a Subject Matter Expert in Software Quality within Lockheed Martin, and internationally in the aviation, space and defense industry. She was the team leader for the SAE Americas Aerospace Quality Group (G-14) in the development of an industry guideline, ARP9005, Aerospace Guidance for Non-Deliverable Software. Most recently, she was the team leader for the International Aerospace Quality Group (IAQG) in the development of the industry standard, AS9115, Quality Management Systems Requirements for Aviation, Space and Defense Organizations Deliverable Software. Pierce is the Lockheed Martin voting member for the IAQG, and a member of SAE International.

Pierce holds a membership with the American Society for Quality (ASQ), and is the primary contact for the Lockheed Martin Corporate Enterprise Membership with ASQ. She was instrumental in the promotion of ASQ to the corporation, and facilitates the membership for all Lockheed Martin employees. Pierce has received accolades for her contributions to development of avionics software, as well as the prestigious Lockheed Martin Aeronautics President’s Eagle award for excellence and achievement.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in computer science and a minor in business management, and holds certifications from ASQ in Software Quality Engineering, Quality Improvement Associate, and Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence.
