NORWOOD, MA-Joseph Amaral, retired president of Instron, provider of testing equipment solutions designed to evaluate mechanical properties of materials and components, was awarded the John M. “Tim” Holt Lifetime Achievement Award from the ASTM Committee E28.

The award is given to members in recognition of consistent, longstanding service and exemplary contributions to the standardization of mechanical testing, as well as the promotion of knowledge and leadership in these pursuits. With more than 28 years of involvement in ASTM, mainly with E28 – the Mechanical Testing Committee, Amaral participated in many subcommittees and chaired numerous task groups in the development of ASTM’s internationally recognized standards for material testing.

“Amaral’s outstanding technical knowledge and standards writing skills were instrumental in the development of many of the standards used by the material testing industry every day,” says Ed Tobolski, the current chairman of E28.

Just before his retirement, Amaral served for three years on the Committee on Standards (COS), which oversees all of the standards developed by ASTM.
