Tornado Spectral Systems is a 2014 PRISM Award Winner

Toronto, Canada --Tornado Spectral Systems (TSS) is pleased to announce that OCTANE-860 has been recognized by the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE) as a Prism Award Winner for 2014

The Prism Awards for Photonics Innovation is a leading international competition that honors the world’s best new photonic products on the market. TSS’ OCTANE-860, a commercially available high-performance OCT spectrometer on a chip is the winner in the category of “Detector, Sensing, Imaging and Camera”. Prism award winners were announced during the SPIE Photonics West conference in San Francisco. This is the 2nd year in a row that TSS has been recognized for innovative products.

“The OCTANE-860 utilizes TSS’ nanophotonics technology which was developed in our Ithaca, NY research facility,” says “Nanophotonics has the ability to replace table-sized scientific instruments with silicon chips fabricated with the same techniques used on microprocessors for computers with significant cost reductions, ”said Art Nitkowski, PhD., lead scientist at TSS in Ithaca.

This is a fully packaged, turn-key solution that is optimized for OCT applications and centered at a wavelength of 860 nm, using photolithography and wafer based fabrication techniques adapted for the visible and near-IR wavelength range. OCTANE matches the typical performance specifications of ophthalmic OCT spectrometers with the added benefit of an ultra-robust, small and low-cost package.

“This spectrometer is representative of next generation optical sensing hardware for use in diverse applications ranging from ophthalmology to dentistry to industrial non-destructive (NDT) testing,” says Bradley Schmidt, CEO of TSS. “
