Mailbag: ISO Common Sense

May 1, 2003
Dear Editor,

I don't understand how so many "quality professionals" can develop their own quality management system (QMS) and then cry so hard about how much documentation it contains! If you want a manageable quality system, then build it that way from the get-go. Far too many companies try to record how many thumbtacks to put in the postings on the bulletin board when that is not the intention of a QMS at all. Few companies I know get paid according to how many complicated procedures they can write. The fault here doesn't lie with the people who write the ISO standards, but with the people who try to implement them without a big dose of good old common sense!
