Colin Powell Discusses Leadership

March 9, 2007

MIAMI-The 8th Annual Six Sigma Summit, held in Miami January 22 to 25, offered attendees workshops, a variety of tracks and networking opportunities, and the chance to meet a former Secretary of State. General Colin Powell discussed his personal leadership style in “Leadership: Taking Charge,” and provided examples of some of his unconventional methods. Powell led troops as both a military leader, as chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff and as Secretary of State. Whether they were in the military or private sector, Powell offered advice on how to leave a mark on an organization. Not only did he receive a standing ovation after his speech, but the crowd was on their feet even before he started speaking. He described some of his military adventures in Germany, where he met Elvis Presley, who was serving with the Third Armored Division in Germany, and talked about life about politics working with a Silicon Valley venture capital firm. Six Sigma IQ delivered the conference on Next-Generation Six Sigma: Harnessing the Power of DfSS, Innovation and Revenue Growth Generation. It included 55 speakers from Six Sigma organizations, and explored the future of Six Sigma, Kaizen, TRIZ and DfSS. It also offered more than 15 workshops and forums on lean, DfSS, Six Sigma for Defense and Pharmaceutical. Networking breaks, receptions, workshops and a larger exhibit hall all helped people connect with their fellow attendees. At the conference’s end, a study tour to Tyco’s Fire & Security’s Florida facilities gave attendees a chance to learn how Six Sigma saved Tyco more than $1 billion.
