Spanish company Aqsense Sl says that its SAL3D software library can help car-makers meet strict quality control standards without interrupting production processes.

SAL3D, the standard software library for 3D image-processing applications, enables the non-contact measurement, analysis and documentation of any three dimensional body to be carried out during high-speed production processes.

The ability to make a rapid comparison with a reference model is an advantage, specifically in the automotive industry where complex components are produced while meeting the highest demands for precision and strict safety requirements. Here it is vital for the production process to have dimensional accuracy and stability, says the firm.

According to Aqsense, the library guarantees quick and precise capture of three-dimensional objects using 3-D point-clouds and therefore enables the comparison of body and chassis parts with a reference model, directly after they leave the stamping tool, to ensure optimal quality management.

A prototype for this application was developed for BMW by Aqsense in collaboration with Photonfocus and Heitec. It successfully proved the technical feasibility of such a concept. Complex components are measured and a direct comparison between the actual part and the reference model is made, based on the analysis of the point clouds.

Firstly the 3-D position of the object is determined and its actual form is measured. The result is then compared with the reference model - the ‘golden template’. Even the slightest deviations can be detected, claims the company.

This procedure has the advantage - particularly in industrial production processes - of ensuring that quality-control standards are met without interrupting the production process. At the same time a high-quality standard can be guaranteed and corrective action can be taken during the early stages of production.

‘This permits refinishing work to be accomplished right in the production process. Loss of time can be widely avoided and productivity is maintained at a high level,’ commented Ramon Pallí, CEO, Aqsense.

Aqsense is exhibiting its products on booth E58, hall 4, at Vision 2010.
