Speaking of Quality

Beyond Membership: Discovering the Unexpected Rewards of Being Involved in ASQ

I learned how decisions are made, how people collaborate, and how shared goals bring groups together.

When I first joined ASQ, I simply wanted a way to stay connected to the quality profession outside my day‑to‑day work. I had no idea how much it would shape my career—and even my personal growth. At the beginning, my involvement was small: attending meetings, listening to presentations, and meeting new people. But those early experiences planted the seeds for something bigger. They helped me realize that continuous improvement isn’t just about processes—it’s about developing myself as well.

I still remember walking into my first ASQ meeting, not knowing what to expect. Would I fit in? Would the discussions matter to me? Those doubts disappeared quickly. I found myself surrounded by people who shared my passion for quality and improvement. That immediate sense of belonging was my first sign that ASQ would become more than a membership. For me, it became a community.

The Hidden Value of Membership

ASQ offers plenty of well‑known benefits—resources, certifications, and a broad network of professionals. But the most meaningful benefits, at least for me, weren’t the ones listed on any brochure. They were the conversations, the mentorship, and the sense of belonging that came from connecting with people who genuinely care about this field. Talking with experienced members gave me insight I never would have found in a book. Hearing how others approached challenges or navigated complex situations helped me grow my confidence and expand how I think about quality.

Another unexpected benefit was exposure to different industries. While the principles of quality stay the same, seeing how they show up in healthcare, manufacturing, or service environments opened my mind to new ideas. Learning from people outside my own background reminded me that innovation often comes from looking beyond what’s familiar.

Stepping into a Volunteer Leadership Role

Serving as the Toledo Section Secretary turned out to be much more valuable than I anticipated. The role sharpened my organizational skills and reinforced the importance of clear communication. Keeping minutes, managing correspondence, and staying aligned with ASQ guidelines taught me how to coordinate details in a way that truly supports a team. Those skills have carried over into my career, where accuracy and clear communication are essential.

But the biggest takeaway wasn’t the administrative work—it was the experience of seeing how a volunteer organization functions. I learned how decisions are made, how people collaborate, and how shared goals bring groups together. The role showed me that leadership isn’t always about being the one in front. Often, it’s about creating the structure that allows others to succeed.

Of course, balancing volunteer work with a demanding career had its moments. There were busy weeks when everything seemed to land at once. But those pressures pushed me to become more adaptable and intentional with my time—skills that continue to serve me well.

Career Impact

My involvement in ASQ strengthened more than just my technical knowledge. It helped shape how I show up professionally. Taking on leadership responsibilities signaled initiative and commitment - qualities that open doors. Through ASQ, I’ve had opportunities to speak, collaborate, and take part in projects I might not have pursued otherwise.

More importantly, the experience helped me grow as a leader. When you’ve worked with volunteers - people who are there because they genuinely want to be - motivating and aligning teams at work feel more intuitive. The communication, organization, and strategic thinking I built through ASQ are skills I rely on every day.

Looking Ahead

ASQ continues to be a foundation of my professional growth. For me, it’s not just a membership. It’s a place to learn, contribute, and stay connected to a community that values quality as much as I do. If someone is thinking about getting more involved, my advice is simple: go for it. Volunteer for a committee, attend a meeting, share your perspective. The return isn’t measured only in certifications or credentials—it’s in the relationships, experiences, and confidence you gain along the way.

As I look forward, I’m excited to continue contributing and to help new members discover the same opportunities that shaped my own path. ASQ has given me so much, and I’m committed to paying it forward.
