Jim's Gems: Energy Relates to Purpose

Have you ever thought about how, or if, a person’s energy level relates to purpose? Maybe not, but I bet you’ve occasionally been curious why some people seem to have more energy.  It’d also be a safe bet that there have been times which you wished you had more get-up-and-go? Let's discuss how high-energy people get that way.

Why is it that some people seem to have a never-ending supply of energy? From the time their eyes open in the morning, they are eager to start their day. They use positive self-talk to fuel their energy tank. They radiate good spirits and high energy all day. You know several people who fit that description.  If you’re like many others, I bet you have stopped by the vitamin counter at the drug store, wondering what you could take to emulate that type of energy.

Let me tell you what I believe. Assuming you are in good health, your strength and energy comes from having a significant purpose and clear goals which support that purpose. High-energy people know what they want and have an unshakable belief that these things are possible. They have a purpose that they have chosen, and they set goals and develop action plans to help them achieve it.

What is your purpose? When determining your purpose, you should make it as specific as possible.  To add power and high-energy, your purpose has to be something meaningful. The late Leo Rosten said, “I cannot believe that the purpose of life is to be happy. I think the purpose of life is to be useful, to be responsible, to be compassionate. It is, above all to matter, to count, to stand for something, to have made some difference that you lived at all.”  One other caveat is to have your purpose remain flexible with time, desire, and achievement. 

When you discover your purpose and have a clear idea fixed firmly in your mind of what it is you want to be and do, you will be surprised at how your energy level will grow to help you find ways to get there. You will become very resourceful and creative. Essentially you will discover that having a purpose might just be what the doctor prescribed because it will be the best vitamin you have ever taken!
