Work holding fixtures for inspection devices have evolved over time and now have become, in some cases, as complex as the parts they are designed to hold. There was a day when some 1-2-3 blocks, knee blocks, double-sided tape and hot glue were all you needed to fixture parts for measurement on a coordinate measuring machine (CMM).
In the car body area of their Emden plant Volkswagen AG has taken a pioneering series measuring area into operation. From a loading area with eleven parking places the measuring plates, mounted with car body parts, automatically go into measuring stations.
During the past 25 years, coordinate measuring machine (CMM) sensor technology has expanded from tactile and scanning systems to now include optical, laser and surface finish sensors, effectively expanding the CMM’s capabilities.
