The long awaited ASTM E18-07 Rockwell Hardness Standard has been released. While it is technically similar to the older version, some changes affect both users and service providers.
Quality Magazine is no stranger when it comes to awards. For the past several years we’ve been giving out three annual awards-the Quality Leadership 100, Quality Plant of the Year and Quality Professional of the Year.
After attending a Lean 101 class, Joe Oakley, powdercoat team leader for Edmond, OK-based Pelco Products Inc., manufacturer of traffic signal hardware, structural poles, decorative lighting and utility hardware, knew he wanted to use lean in his department.
Wilhelm Bott GmbH & Co. KG (Gaildorf, Germany), a manufacturer of factory and service car racking systems, has used computer numerical controlled (CNC) machines for its production since the mid 1990s.
Air gaging was the breakthrough measuring technology of the 1940s and 1950s. Introduced decades before electronic gaging was widely accepted, it provided the first high performance-50 microinch or better-gaging on the shop floor. Today, air gaging is just as important and actually growing in popularity.
Surface analysis is key to many QC/QA requirements in a range of industries. It can be used to inspect finished products, for R&D and for in-process inspection during production. Materials inspected include metals, composites, plastics, paper, painted surfaces and glass.
At ibg NDT, a new eddy current instrument can detect multiple types of surface flaws simultaneously with no resolution loss for any of the types. Bill Buschur, general manager of ibg NDT Systems Corp. (Farmington Hills, MI), likened it to radio: listeners can clearly hear only one station at a time-or in the case of eddy current, only one flaw type at a time-because multiple radios tuned to multiple stations produce only unintelligible noise.
Since writing my last note for October, I have been traveling yet again, to Spain, Morocco and, of course, the Midwest. I flew into Detroit three times since writing that column, attending the MS&T show at the end of September, a Powertrain Engineering and Manufacturing Alliance (PEMA) press conference in October, and finished the year with a computed tomography lab open house in December.
Eddy current inspection is a versatile nondestructive testing technique. It allows accurate measurement and evaluation of the conductivity and, therefore, the chemistry, hardness and geometry of any electrically conductive material that is brought into the proximity of a coil of wire.
Maximizing product output and production efficiency without compromising quality is a cornerstone for any successful manufacturing company. A company’s reputation and brand perception in part rests on its ability to produce a quality product consistently and efficiently over time. Remington Arms, founded in 1816 in upstate New York, is one of the nation’s oldest continuously operating manufacturers of firearms as well as one of the largest rifle and shotgun makers in the world. As such, there is a lot riding on the company’s reputation.
