I have big problems with the Six Sigma approach, and would not recommend it to anyone. Let me tell you why. This blog will take place in six parts, where I will tell you the six problems I have with Six Sigma.
It has been said that creativity requires the courage to let go of certainties. One thing I do know is that creativity is not reserved for those who engage in artistic pursuits. Being creative means acknowledging that there are many possibilities aside from the obvious.
Standards and specifications do not provide an enjoyable reading experience. There are no metaphors or similes as in poetry. There is no mayhem or suspense like you would find in a good mystery novel; no jokes as in a comedy; and worse yet, no plot or climatic ending.
When the challenges we face seem to be getting more daunting, it likely means that we're making real progress. As we set challenging goals, the difficulty to succeed usually takes more effort.
This new blog, which will be posted the last week of every other month, will deal with issues of technical competence and ethics as they affect quality. It will address what is wrong with some quality organizations, how they have gone astray, and what the effect is of their failure to fulfill their responsibility.
When we make a mistake, it is acceptable to perform an autopsy and think about what happened--but, then, you must quickly get over it. Understand what happened, learn from it, gain wisdom from it and become even more effective than before.
There should be some training and explanations of proper GD&T evaluation. I wouldn't say it is THE cause of manufacturing's decline, but possibly a contributor.
The ability to achieve and succeed is part of our very nature. If we are vague about what we intend to do, the results we are likely to get will be of minimal value.
