Speaking of Quality
Seeing the Bigger Picture: How ASQ Expanded My View of Quality
A single decision to pursue certification led to a much broader professional journey.

Like many professionals, my introduction to ASQ began with a very practical goal: certification. At the time, I was focused on strengthening my technical foundation and building credibility in the field of quality. Certification provided a clear path forward, and through that process, I became more engaged with my local ASQ section and the broader quality community.
What I did not expect was how quickly that initial step would open the door to something much broader.
My early involvement with my local section played an important role in shaping my experience. Attending meetings and connecting with other professionals exposed me to perspectives and applications of quality that extended well beyond my day-to-day work. These interactions brought concepts to life through real-world examples, shared challenges, and practical insights. It reinforced that quality is not just a set of tools, but a way of thinking that spans industries and roles.
At that stage, my view of ASQ was still fairly focused. I saw it as a valuable resource for certification, professional development, and local networking. All of those were meaningful and impactful, but they only represented a portion of what ASQ had to offer.
That perspective began to change when I had the opportunity to attend the World Conference on Quality and Improvement (WCQI).
Attending WCQI was a turning point. Walking into the conference, I was immediately struck by the scale and diversity of the quality community. Professionals from across industries, countries, and career stages came together with a shared commitment to advancing quality. The breadth of topics, experiences, and perspectives was both energizing and eye-opening.
What stood out most was not just the knowledge being shared but the sense of connection and possibility. Sessions highlighted emerging ideas, evolving practices, and new ways of thinking about quality in an increasingly complex environment. Conversations extended beyond formal presentations into hallways and networking events, where ideas were exchanged, and relationships began to form.
It became clear that ASQ was not just a place to learn established practices. It was a dynamic environment where the future of quality is actively being shaped.
WCQI also helped me recognize the many pathways for involvement within ASQ. Beyond attending events, there are opportunities to volunteer, contribute to technical communities, participate in leadership roles, and collaborate with others who are passionate about quality. Seeing members actively engaged in these roles made me realize that ASQ is not something you simply join. It is something you can actively shape through your involvement.
This experience shifted my mindset. I began to see my involvement with ASQ not just as a way to gain knowledge, but as an opportunity to contribute to a larger professional community. That shift does not happen all at once. It often begins with small steps, such as attending a meeting, asking a question, or connecting with someone new. Over time, those small steps can lead to deeper engagement and a stronger sense of connection.
Another important realization was how ASQ supports growth at every stage of a career. Whether someone is just beginning their journey or has decades of experience, there are meaningful ways to engage. Early-career professionals can build foundational knowledge and connections, while more experienced members can share insights, mentor others, and continue learning in new areas. This ongoing exchange of knowledge and experience is one of the defining strengths of the ASQ community.
Looking back, it is interesting how a single decision to pursue certification led to a much broader professional journey. What started as a focused goal evolved into an ongoing experience of learning, connection, and contribution. The local section provided the foundation, while WCQI expanded my understanding of what was possible.
For those who are new to ASQ, it is easy to focus on the most immediate benefits, such as certifications or training. Those are important, but they are only the beginning. There is a much larger set of opportunities that become visible through engagement and participation.
For those who have been involved for some time, there is always another level to explore. Whether it is attending a new event, connecting with a different group, or taking on a new role, each step offers a chance to grow and to contribute.
ASQ has a way of expanding your perspective over time. What begins as a single step can lead to new opportunities, new connections, and a deeper understanding of the profession. My experience is just one example of how that journey can unfold, starting locally and growing into something much larger.
