There is good news for those who need quality-related products in 2007. Overall, estimates for the 2007 spending of quality equipment, software and services will be $3.4 billion, according to Quality Magazine’s 7th Annual Capital Spending Survey. A software boom in spending will account for 21% of this figure. Of the $3.4 billion projected, 50%, or almost $1.7 billion, is earmarked for test, measurement and inspection equipment. Twenty-nine percent, or $999.2 million, will be spent on quality services.
Vision systems must automate the optical inspection process. Driven by this need, eBx software from Ram Optical Instrumentation Inc. (Rochester, NY) has dual-monitor support, optional touch-panel interface, and simplified editing capabilities for writing and using measurement routines. “Using vision technology to measure a manufactured part accurately and automatically with optics is very common today,” says Mark Glowacky, president of Ram Optical Instrumentation Inc.
A tensile test is a static measurement of the effects of tensile force on a material or component, or to determine the bond strength of two materials that have been assembled together. By applying a tensile force on a material, one can find the tensile strength, yield point, yield strength, percent elongation, reduction in area and the modulus of elasticity. Tensile test results are used to indicate strength, ductility, stiffness and the correct parameters for heat treatment or processing.
Quality Magazine’s publisher, Tom Williams, brought up the subject of metrication in the September issue-he wondered why the United States was not metric yet. This column is about dimensions of all kinds so I couldn’t let Tom’s questions remain unanswered. As Quality’s unofficial troublemaker, I offer the following.
The 2006 elections are over and the new Democrat-lead Congress is getting ready to take power next month. What will this mean for manufacturing and quality? During the past six years, manufacturing has suffered both a tremendous blow (9/11) and a remarkable recovery.
