ABB Could Sell Robotics Segment in Alternative to Spinoff

Back on May 13, Bloomberg reported ABB Ltd. “is exploring a potential sale of the robotics unit.” The sale was described as an alternative to a plan for a main spinoff and estimated to be worth $3.5 billion. Others close to the situation estimated as much as $5 billion.
The company said in an email statement to Bloomberg, “Should ABB be approached, it is the duty of the executive committee and board to thoroughly evaluate all proposals,” however, “we believe that a spinoff is the best option to optimize the respective companies’ abilities to create customer value.”
The Bloomberg report also mentioned that back in April, “ABB said it plans to spin off and list the robotics unit in the second quarter of 2026,” and deemed it “one of the first major strategic moves by the firm’s new Chief Executive Officer Morten Wierod.” Wierod began his duties as CEO in August last year.
ABB’s robotics unit is said to comprise two-thirds of ABB’s robotics and discrete automation division and employs 7,000 people with manufacturing hubs in China, the U.S. and Sweden, where its robotics business began, and in 2024, posted double-digit margins standalone.
