Q-Cast
PODCAST | Digitizing NDT

Michelle: Can you tell our listeners, I know you've been in the industry a while, can you tell our listeners how long you've been serving the NDE industry and what led you to the field?
Nasrin: I guess, first of all, I'll say that my background is in, I come from the software world. I've been in the software IT industry for 25-plus years. And primarily what types of applications, software, that I've been delivering to the world is business process improvement software, mostly from a mobile computing perspective−−mobile applications and the concept being how do we improve a business's operations through mobile software? We did that for many years. And about eight years ago, as we were talking with some analysts in the software industry, they were encouraging us to take a look at the NDT field, which we knew a little bit about through some of our customers, but not a whole lot.
So, we started to talk with operators in the NDT space, companies that ran NDT service organizations and listened to their challenges and became really excited about the potential for bringing our expertise in business process improvement, particularly for the field, the NDT industry.
That was the start of it. We started sort of dipping our toe in and we had some guidance by several NDT service organizations who helped us come up with the requirements. What we knew, wanted to do was we wanted to build a product that would help NDT companies become more effective at what they did. And a lot of that had to do with, we understood that a lot of the processes that were currently being performed by NDT service companies was manual. And so we knew that we could provide value by bringing in a digital sort of more automated operations to the industry. And so that turned into Floodlight.
And about five years ago, Floodlight software was officially launched with our platform that basically enables NDT service operations start to finish completely digitally. So that's where our focus is.
Michelle: That's great. It feels like such a need. Some industries are a little further ahead than others, so it's great to kind of bring everyone a little further. Can you tell us a little bit more about how the software platform does improve NDT operations?
Nasrin: Yes, absolutely. So, the basic is that we are looking to build, to provide NDT operation or NDT organizations a platform, a digital foundation for their company. And the idea there is that they move from manual operations, any kind of like manual or Excel spreadsheets and move that into a well-structured digital format.
The benefit there is so that they can view the data long-term and manipulate that data to basically provide a level of efficiency, a greater level of efficiency for both the management of inspection operations as well as the performing them.
