Whistleblowers serve as guardians of public interest by exposing misconduct that could harm others or undermine trust in institutions. Their disclosures have led to significant changes in policies, regulations, and practices across various sectors, including government, healthcare, finance, and environmental protection.
My role as a whistleblower stems from a strong sense of ethics and an ingrained understanding of right and wrong, which many of us develop during our upbringing. Personally, joining the military right out of high school instilled in me duty, honor and commitment, as my survival depended on staying alert. I later worked for a major airline, receiving extensive training that prepared me for my current role as a whistleblower.
However, being a whistleblower requires careful consideration and strategic thinking. It is important to choose battles wisely, as there may be repercussions. A superior might either commend your actions or create a challenging work environment, underscoring the need for collaboration and recognition of the workforce’s contributions. This collaborative spirit can safeguard job security and help navigate the company through potential troubles.
As I sit in a senate hearing listening to a new CEO speak of non-conformance reductions, I see the families who have lost loved ones. It’s unacceptable to have any new product with non-conformance in your factories. That is why we have a warranty, and the suppliers are the ones that can bring down giants. It is simple David and Goliath. What the public doesn’t know is another quality, called partner quality. This quality is the supplier working on aircraft doing warranty work. When it comes to the public, we need more regulators like DCMA (Defense Contract Management agency) for the safety of the public.
Whistleblowers often face significant challenges, including retaliation, job loss, legal battles, and personal attacks. To safeguard their rights, in the transportation sector we have AIR21. When using an AIR21 you have 90 days from the adverse action, and if you feel strong and confident, hold on to your integrity, speak up and do it in a way to give your employer a chance to correct it. In my case I was fired, and I quickly learned about various laws and regulations that have been established, such as the Whistleblower Protection Act in the United States. Remember, pick your battles, and think of your family and friends, they fly on the aircraft just like you.
Trust in yourself and your training by challenging yourself to know your work to the fullest. Educate yourself on the law, read the boards in the workplace, always keep on top of your game. I used The Whistleblower Protection Act of 1989, a U.S. federal law that protects government employees who report misconduct. It provides legal recourse for whistleblowers facing retaliation and aims to encourage the reporting of wrongdoing. And The Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, enacted in response to corporate scandals like Enron, which includes provisions to protect whistleblowers in publicly traded companies. It mandates internal controls and procedures for financial reporting to prevent fraud.
Whistleblowing can lead to significant positive outcomes, such as:
- Policy and regulatory changes
- Increased transparency and accountability
- Improved organizational practices
In my case I do it because of my upbringing and commitment to quality and the safety of the flying public.
Moreover, whistleblowers contribute to a culture of integrity by demonstrating that ethical behavior is paramount, even in the face of adversity.
Whistleblowing is a vital mechanism for uncovering and addressing misconduct within organizations. Whistleblowers risk their careers and personal lives to uphold the values of transparency, accountability, and integrity. Their actions not only rectify wrongdoings but also foster a culture where ethical behavior is the norm. As society and aircraft continue to evolve, the importance of protecting whistleblowers and encouraging ethical disclosures cannot be overstated. Whistleblowers are indeed a beacon of integrity and morals, illuminating the path toward a more just, transparent, and safe world.
