Nondestructive testing (NDT) is a crucial process in many industries. It is used to evaluate the properties of materials, components, and structures without causing damage. NDT plays a significant role in ensuring the safety, reliability, and quality of products, structures, and assets. To perform NDT effectively and accurately, individuals need to acquire proper training, qualifications, and certification. We will explore the importance of NDT certification, the different types of NDT methods, the benefits of being certified, and the process of obtaining NDT certification.

Importance of NDT Certification

NDT certification is mandatory for individuals working in industries where the integrity of materials and structures is of utmost importance. Certification ensures that NDT professionals have the necessary knowledge, skills, and competencies to perform tests accurately and interpret results effectively. It also demonstrates a commitment to quality, safety, and professionalism in the field of NDT.

Certification programs provide standardized training and evaluation processes that help ensure consistency and reliability in NDT practices. By obtaining certification, individuals can enhance their credibility, advance their careers, and increase their earning potential. Employers also benefit from hiring certified NDT professionals as it helps them meet regulatory requirements, improve quality control, and reduce the risk of costly errors and failures.

There are several different certification standards and bodies. Some of the programs provide internal, or company-controlled certifications, while others provide external or individual controlled certifications. Each of these types of certification programs have some basic commonality, but there are variations in the requirements for formal training, experience hours, and even examinations. The internal programs are company controlled and regulated while the external programs are controlled by one of the various world or industry NDT certification bodies. Internal certifications are very important, but certification obtained in these programs is only valid within that company. So, certified personnel will need to recomplete at least some portion of the certification process when they leave that company. The external certifications are valid outside of individual companies and persons holding those certifications can maintain their certifications outside of an individual company.

Types of NDT Methods

There are many NDT methods used to inspect materials and structures without causing damage. The method(s) used for a particular inspection are selected based on the need and criticality of the application. The requirement for each inspection method is typically flowed down through an engineering group. Some of the most common NDT methods include:

  1. Visual Testing (VT): This method involves the visual inspection of materials and structures to detect surface defects, such as cracks, corrosion, and other discontinuities.
  2. Ultrasonic Testing (UT): UT uses high-frequency sound waves to detect internal defects, measure thickness, and determine material properties.
  3. Radiographic Testing (RT): RT uses X-rays or gamma rays to inspect the internal structure of materials and detect defects that are not visible to the naked eye.
  4. Magnetic Particle Testing (MT): MT is used to detect surface and near-surface defects in ferromagnetic materials by applying magnetic fields and magnetic particles.
  5. Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT): PT is used to detect surface defects in non-porous materials by applying a liquid penetrant and using capillary action to seep into surface discontinuities.
  6. Electromagnetic Testing (ET): ET is used to find surface and subsurface defects; it can also be used to measure thickness and sort material types.

The common methods also can have subspecialties within them. As examples, radiographic testing has digital imaging and computed tomography. Ultrasonic testing has phased array testing. These examples all still include the basic method training and experience, but they will also include a block of specific training and experience requirements as well.

There are also less common NDT methods, such as acoustic emissions (AE), thermal/infrared testing (IRT), vibration analysis (VA), and others. Each of which will have their own requirements for certification.

Benefits of Being Certified

Obtaining NDT certification offers numerous benefits to individuals and organizations involved in nondestructive testing:

  1. Enhanced Credibility: Certification demonstrates expertise and competency in NDT practices, enhancing credibility and trust with clients and employers.
  2. Quality Assurance: Certification ensures that NDT professionals adhere to industry standards, leading to improved quality control and reduced risks of defects and failures.
  3. Compliance: Certification helps organizations meet regulatory requirements and industry standards, ensuring compliance with safety and quality regulations.
  4. Professional Development: Certification programs provide ongoing training and development opportunities, allowing NDT professionals to stay updated on the latest technologies and best practices.
  5. Career Advancement: Certified NDT professionals have better job prospects, opportunities for career advancement, and higher earning potential.

Process of Obtaining NDT Certification

The process of obtaining NDT certification typically involves the following steps:

  1. Training: Individuals seeking certification must undergo training in the specific NDT method they wish to be certified in. Training programs are offered by various institutions, including technical schools, colleges, and NDT training centers. Training can also be conducted by the individual companies that are maintaining their own NDT certification program.  
  2. Experience: Candidates are required to have a certain amount of practical experience in the particular method of NDT to be eligible for certification. This experience varies with each method type and as the need for more skill and detail is required, the hours of experience greatly increases.
  3. Examination: After completing the training program and having the required experience, candidates must pass a series of certification examinations to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of NDT principles, techniques, and procedures. The examinations also have a practical portion where the candidates must validate; they can detect and document a particular defect of interest. The candidates can be stronger in some areas of knowledge than others, but in the end, they must meet a high standard.
  4. Certification: Upon successful completion of training, examination, and experience requirements, candidates are awarded NDT certification. The certifications are valid for a set period of time, and most programs also include at least an annual proficiency evaluation to maintain certification.
  5. Recertification: NDT professionals are required to undergo recertification at regular intervals to ensure that they remain current with industry standards and best practices. The intervals vary from program to program, but a maximum of five years between certifications is standard.

In summary, NDT certification is essential for individuals working in industries where the integrity of materials and structures is critical. Certification demonstrates expertise, credibility, and professionalism in the field of nondestructive testing, benefiting both individuals and organizations. There are several different approaches to certification with internal programs and external programs, but either approach provides companies with a more competent workforce.

By obtaining NDT certification, professionals can enhance their career prospects, improve quality control, and ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations. The process of obtaining NDT certification involves controlled and prescribed training, examination, experience, certification, and recertification, ensuring that certified professionals maintain high standards of competency and proficiency in NDT practices.
